something up - something small like cutting out pedicures so you can afford the bigger cable package your husband wants , or something HUGE like not going back to school to study what you ’ ve always loved because you don ’ t want to spend too much time away from the faaaaaamily - NO ONE NOTICES BUT YOU .
When you deny your self-care , you deny yourself care . It ’ s a subtle change in the spacing , but a world of difference when you think about it that way .
You deserve to care about yourself . You are worthy .
YOU ARE WORTHY OF SELF CARE . So if you ’ re like ME and the words self care make you roll your eyes - “ Self care ? Is this going to be about taking bubble baths and wearing fur coats and listening to affirmations while I sleep ? Give me a break .” - know this :
It ’ s time to cut that shit out .
You are worthy of self care . It ’ s much deeper than any of the fluffy nonsense that cosmetics companies and chocolate manufacturers and yoga pants purveyors would have you believe .
Self care is giving to yourself as you give to others , so you can continue to give to others as you give to yourself .
There was a really important guy who said something to that effect - it was something like , “ Love your neighbor as you love yourself .” Remember that ? The statement is , of course , we are to love others , but the implication is that it is equally important to love OURSELVES .
How does that work in real life , though ? How do we make that happen when we ’ re trapped in the behaviors of give-give-giveand-never-receive ?
It ’ s all baby steps , baby . For me , that ’ s buying good cream , and having a why-thehell-not full tablespoon in my coffee every single day . It ’ s also
in vowing to stop DIYing ( and ruining ) my hair color . It ’ s even in allowing myself to be honest with clients when a situation grows uncomfortable or disadvantageous .
Every time I make one of these seemingly small decisions , I grow more comfortable with myself , less resentful of others , and deeper in my ability to produce and yes , my favorite , GIVE .
Self care is no longer a luxury I can ’ t afford . It ’ s an important necessity I can ’ t deny .
Join me in this , will you ? As you read all of these other articles and wonder about putting the suggestions into practice , remember :
You deserve to care about yourself .
YOU ARE WORTHY . Now go act like it . apple
