have bodies that are a little funky sometimes . We have bodies with limbs missing , that need a wheelchair , or some other kind of mobility aid to get around , that are deaf or hard of hearing , that are blind , or ( if you ’ re truly a rainbow woman , like me ) extremities that are a different colour and temperature , dependant on the hour ( I know , I ’ m like a human lava lamp , it ’ s AWESOME ).
We matter . Our bodies fails us , they confuse us , they do weird things , but that is not all they do . They keep us alive , they fight for us , they give us a capsule from which we are able to laugh , and smile , and tell really bad jokes . Maybe they can ’ t do all the ‘ normal ’ things , but let me ask you , who got to decide what the definition of ‘ normal ’ was ? My body is normal , because it is not . My body is weird , so is everybody else ’ s , bodies are weird . Think about it , how weird is it , that we can live inside this little bubble of humanness , and we can sing , and speak , but not using the same centres of the brain , we can interpret the same 26 funny looking symbols to mean a million different things ( if you ’ re reading this article , congratulations , you ’ re doing it !), we can do anything and everything , even if some of us do it a little differently from others . Guess what ? We ’ re all different . It ’ s the key facet of being a human being , and I think it ’ s rad .
Does my disability mean I shouldn ’ t love my body ? Absolutely not ! Look at all the incredible things it , and I , can do , both because of and in spite of whatever our ( that is , me and my body ) ability level is . Is there anything in the world that should stop you from wanting to be best friends with your body , because it ’ s just so cool , no , there ’ s not . Bodies do awesome stuff , and whatever either of our ‘ flaws ’ are , I ’ m glad that me and mine are a team . apple
