Dragons Den at Breadalbane Academy
Over the last 8 weeks senior pupils at Breadalbane Academy have been working in partnership with The Breathe
Project undertaking an employability and enterprise course. This opportunity involved 20 pupils split into two teams
to run two competitive businesses. Each team had to come up with a business name and logo, develop a business
idea, nominate a local charity as part of their corporate responsibility and deliver a presentation to 3 local business
men (The Dragons). In addition they carried out apprentice style challenges sourcing many items for their stalls for
free.
As part of their presentation each team had to present to the dragons how their business would be marketed, their
income, expenditure and profit margins whilst covering aspects of health and safety through carrying out a risk
assessment. After two very successful presentations the dragons made each team an offer of investment of £100
each, then with an unexpected twist the Dragons offered them the opportunity to receive a £300 investment if they
combined their businesses into one. After careful consideration both teams accepted this offer and proceeded in
the final stages of the course, leading a Valentines business event which was held at Breadalbane Community
Campus on the 11th Feb 2016.
This event had a large variety of stalls selling confectionary, cards, roses and chocolates, they also hosted a 5
aside Zorb Football and hired various inflatables suitable for all ages.
Local businessman Ryan Hanningan commented “both presentations were of a high standard with each team
showing a good understanding of what it takes to run a successful business. We gave constructive feedback,
which if incorporated into their businesses I'm sure they will make a considerable profit”.
Franny McGrath, course organiser said, “It has been a privilege to watch the young people develop and I was
delighted to see how each young person coped with the pressure of running their business on the day”.
