Letter from the Editor

Since our last edition there has been a lot of change within state governments across the nation . Firstly we had Mike Baird resign from the NSW State Parliament with Gladys Berejiklian taking over as Premier unopposed . This appears to have opened the door for renewed discussion on the possible dismantling of the local government amalgamations which Mr Baird pushed through whilst Premier .
Following power shortages , over the summer period , the South Australian Government has announced it will spend more than $ 500 million to build a new gas-fired power plant , and Australia ’ s largest battery , as it moves to secure the state ’ s energy supplies . Whilst South Australia look to secure their future the question still remained where is the capital investment coming from to secure power for the eastern states .
Right on cue Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull revealed the Federal Government will invest $ 2 billion by expanding the Snowy Mountains hydro scheme in a bid to power up to 500,000 homes . The plan is to increase the current 4,000 megawatt output of the scheme by 50 per cent , which the Government claims is an “ electricity game changer ” and will help prevent power shortages in the eastern states .
Whilst all this was going on the Western Australian ’ s went to the polls and swept aside the Liberals in preference for a Labor lead State Government .

apt that our lead feature for this month is IPWEA ’ s SLSC Roadmap “ The SLSC Roadmap examines Australia ’ s policy objectives that relate to modernising street lighting and , where possible , quantifying the benefits of widespread adoption of modern lighting technologies . ”
Also featured this month is a review on sporting grounds maintenance and infrastructure , the pressures which are increasing on these facilities and the design and maintenance practices available to assist in meeting these increased demands .
