URBAN PLANNING

SMART CITIES

– a collaborative effort

By Lauren Oakey , CEO , LG Professionals Australia

Smarter Cities
How a community or a city comes together defines its capacity for success . And in a time of immense innovation and mobility , cities that attract talented and skillful people and the finance needed to invest in them will become hubs of productivity ; generating jobs and growth , and perpetuating new opportunities . What gets that ball rolling and supports its continuation is a national focus of the Australian Federal Government , via its Smart Cities Plan ; all about smart investment , smart policy and smart technology .
This question of how to build a great community is one that local government grapples with too , which means the Smart Cities Plan is , and has already been , an excellent opportunity to engage with other levels of government , tertiary institutions , NGOs , the business sector and community groups to share our sector ’ s experience and place-based knowledge and play our part in collaborations to create opportunity and maximise potential for all our residents .
What makes a city smart ?
Liveable – with housing , shopping precincts , and access to services , facilities and green space
Productive – a thriving economy , high investment levels , good employment opportunities
Accessible – via good transport networks ( including public transport ), affordable housing , internet access , safe , with easy mobility for diverse groups
Sustainable – intelligent management of resources for the long term
Resilient – feasible plans and infrastructure in place to address problems such as environmental disasters
