Darling Harbour Boulevard , Sydney
… arguably the most prestigious smart street lighting installation in Australia
The International Convention Centre ( ICC ) Sydney , designed by Hassell and Populous , has opened at Darling Harbour in Sydney recently . Three new venues are connected : the Theatre , the Exhibition Centre and the International Convention Centre . In front of these venues runs the new Darling Harbour Boulevard with a length of 450m .
The brief for the boulevard illumination called for multifunctional and smart , but at the same time a minimalistic design without clutter . Embellishments with coloured lights , especially for certain events were also an objective .
In a close corporation between Hassel , Lendlease and the supplier Form and Light , a quite unique lighting system was developed to fulfil the requirements . The best fit for the requirements was a pole lighting system from HESS , Germany , which is not only very minimalistic , but incorporates all the following functionalities into one 9m high pole :
From the lighting side : white lighting from two light fittings on top of the pole for the general boulevard illumination and two colour changing spot lights – all remotely controlled . An off-site controller allows setting light scenes including dynamic colours and dimming .
Some poles have additional WIFI , Power Points and CCTV camera integration . All poles have two powerful integrated PA speaker systems . All in one slim pole , no clutter , just poles .
The successful concepts lead to an extension of this lighting system into Darling Square – currently under construction .
