Over the years, I’ve developed the
habit of picking up a nonfiction book
at the airport. Most of these books are
a quick read. They’re usually books I’d
rarely buy, given the larger selection
in a bookstore, yet I’m curious about
how they found their way onto the
shelves of the airport bookstore, and
I always find at least one worthwhile idea.
My most recent acquisition was The Daily Edge by David
Horsager. Horsager defines “The Daily Edge: The advantage
or edge gained when priorities are clear and there is a daily
effort to act on those priorities.” He gives a preview. “The
book will provide practical ways to be more efficient and
effective while honoring relationships. Each of the tips has
been passed on from a friend or learned from reflection after
a busy day.” Here are the first three sentences: “Eighteen
years ago a man challenged me to not complain for 90 days
straight. I couldn’t complain about anything, not food, not
the weather, nothing. That changed my life.”
How does this relate to bridge? Suppose we challenge
ourselves not to complain about anything during our next
ten duplicate games, not the food, the director, our partner,
the opponents, the state of the game, nothing. Would it
make a difference? I have a feeling it will.
In this issue, we share an experiment by Joseph Michael
Grill, who tripled attendance at his games in a timely way.
How did he do it? Read Come to the Party. Eric Rodwell
is a many-time world champion and a co-author of several
of our books, the most recent the increasingly popular 2/1
Game Force. It seems timely to feature Eric in this issue and
experience his ideas on Declarer Play.
Robert Todd directs our attention to the diamond suit.
Should we show it in response to partner’s 1♣ opening?
Then there’s a chance to test our opinions in the Bidding
Quiz.
David Lindop focuses on the Nine. It’s not quite an honor,
yet it can have an impact on the trick-taking potential of
a deal. Larry Cohen and Jerry Helms are here with their
summer-time ideas.
We look forward to your taking us with you over the next
few months during your travels, and we thank you for being
part of Better Bridge.
Audrey Grant, Editor.
