The Elemental Lovers

When we think of the Lovers card in tarot, what do we think about? Often we think of romantic love, or hot, steamy passionate love.

Older images of the Lovers usually include the man looking at the woman and the woman looking at the angel. Newer images of this card often show the couple in a passionate embrace. Clearly, the older images express the energy of the element that the Golden Dawn associated with the Lovers; the element of Air.

That Major Arcana Six is an Air card surprises some people. Some expect the Lovers to be Water, because Water is associated with emotions and relationships. Others expect the Lovers to be Fire, for passion and sexuality.

But the Lovers is associated with neither Water nor Fire. The Lovers is associated with Air.
