The Lovers Key VI: Someone Who Knows How to Love You

There is nothing like Springtime to get everyone in the mood for love; the buds are up and the sap is rising in the branches. The Lovers, Key VI in the Tarot, is a card that always gets an excited reaction when it shows up in reading. After all, we are all looking for someone who knows how to love us; someone who values us and has chosen us over all others. We are all romantics at the heart of it – the most cynical person you know is revealing in that very cynicism the soul of a true romantic. We long for companionship, partnership and roll-around-on-the-kitchen-floor-bang-on-the-walls sex. We are all raised on the fairy tales of romantic, escapist and courtly love; a knight in shining armour to sweep us off our feet, carry us away, fulfill our every desire and live happily ever after. Romantic comedies, endless love songs and bodice ripping Harlequin Romances reassure us that love will find a way, love will overcome all odds and someday our prince (or princess) will come and all will be well. Alas and alack, life just isn’t like that. They forget to tell us that before you meet your handsome prince, you may be kissing a lot of toads and that those knights in shining armour are usually assholes wearing tinfoil. In chick lit the woman wants and gets the dashing, romantic hero. Women want their own way, they want a man to say all the right words at all the right times. In guy lit the men want the unattainable woman. A very old and very dear friend long since passed away, told me “You can never give a man what he wants.” His advice was very sound.
