On the table in front of the young woman is a tea pot. According to British superstition it is advisable for young ladies to be careful about letting a man have a cup of tea with them as it can lead to pregnancy and that is she allows him to pour her more than one cup of tea she will be unable to resist his advances or influence. She is wearing a yellow shirt which is considered stimulating and is also symbolic of the sun. She is not drinking her tea which is a good sign that indulgence in sensual pleasures will not cause problems but also indicates financial pressures. The pastry is a warning that a sly person is being deceptive or will attempt to interfere. The young man has a coffee pot in front of him; he is not drinking his coffee either and this is a good indication that there will be no opposition to a potential marriage.
