The Lovers Key VI: Continental Breakfast

By Cheryl Lynne Bradley

The Lovers, Key VI in the Tarot, is a card of intimate personal relationships and partnerships. It reminds us that we are responsible for our choices and what we allow to happen within those connections. It also reminds us that we cannot control the choices of our significant other or others but that, in certain situations, we can be held responsible or liable for the choices that our partner makes particularly once we are entwined financially. This card often elicits feelings of joy when drawn in a reading but it has cautionary qualities as well.

A beautiful sun beams down on a young couple sitting down to a simple repast of fruit and a pastry; she is having a morning cup of tea and he is having his coffee. Dining together is a sign of faithful dealing between a host and their guest and indicates the formation of a living connection between two people. In some parts of our world, the act of a couple eating together is considered to be so sacred that they only eat together on their wedding day. This couple is looking at each other with new eyes. Have they remembered to kiss each other good morning? Have they pledged to kiss each other good night always?

The sun is a powerful symbol of clarity and the cycle of human life. The light of the sun represents cosmic intelligence and knowledge which we all seek. The sun’s rays are lunar yellow which can symbolize inconstancy, jealousy, infidelity, betrayal and depravity; all of these qualities are potential issues in intimate personal relationships. The light of the sun also represents our intuition and our capacity for youthful vigour and personal renewal. A blue angel with red wings stands behind the couple with arms and hands held high and her head bowed in reverence as if bestowing her blessing upon them. Blue is always associated with divinity; it symbolizes spirituality and the deeper the blue the more spiritual the aspect. It is also a colour of tolerance, balance, self-control, kindness, reflection, truth, loyalty and justice. Angels represent both the positive and negative aspects of our psyches. Angels are created in a state of grace and are free to choose between good and evil. We are all helped in our lives along the road to higher good by the guidance of a Guardian Angel. Wings represent freedom and achievement of spirituality, the red in the wings reminds us not to let our passions override our intelligence.

On the table in front of the young woman is a tea pot. According to British superstition it is advisable for young ladies to be careful about letting a man have a cup of tea with them as it can lead to pregnancy and that is she allows him to pour her more than one cup of tea she will be unable to resist his advances or influence. She is wearing a yellow shirt which is considered stimulating and is also symbolic of the sun. She is not drinking her tea which is a good sign that indulgence in sensual pleasures will not cause problems but also indicates financial pressures. The pastry is a warning that a sly person is being deceptive or will attempt to interfere. The young man has a coffee pot in front of him; he is not drinking his coffee either and this is a good indication that there will be no opposition to a potential marriage. The apple in front of him is a good sign to go ahead and pursue future plans. He is shirtless, possibly naked, and this is a symbol of truth or inferiority but it can also represent being divested of false ideas and of inhibitions which can be obstructing development.

Being bound in an unhealthy relationship will only bring you disappointment, heartache and failure. Sincere love is a great predictor of happiness and contentment in life but one must make healthy choices and have a clear understanding of what commitment means to you.

Food for thought: Better alone than badly accompanied.

Divinatory tidbit: A relationship is offered, don’t overwhelm it with lust.
