USING CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING TO
INNOVATE IN YOUR ASSOCIATION
BY CAROLINE FRYER BOLINGBROKE
EXPERT BRIEFING
Creative problem solving is a structured and effective process which
will help your association to innovate. This briefing is based on the
‘Innovating Your Content’ workshop at the Technology for Associations
Congress and includes practical tips for anyone wanting to organise a
creative thinking session in their association.
What is creativity and why do we need it?
First a quick warm up
Most people see creativity as something to do with the
arts, and something that they either have or haven’t got.
Actually creativity is more about thinking skills, so it is
possible to be more creative about anything. Creative
thinking can be learned, and it can be taught. Deliberate
creativity is useful for associations and creative problem
solving processes can be used to make deliberate
creativity happen.
Can you connect all the dots
by drawing four straight,
continuous lines that pass
through each of the nine dots,
never lifting the pencil from the
paper? (See the answer at the
end of the article.)
