As the global contemporary art scene grows, private museums, especially those in Miami, are at the forefront of brilliant cultural connections. BY HEIDI ZUCKERMAN W ITH THE INCREDIBLE RISE IN THE market value of contemporary art— largely via well-publicized auction results—global interest in the art world has never been higher. Some of that recent focus has been on private museums and the misperception that this is a new phenomenon. Yet there’s a strong and storied history of seminal private art museums in the U.S. in the 20th century. THE VISIONARIES Earlier instances of this can be traced back to 16thcentury Italy with Cosimo de’ Medici beginning a collection in Florence in 1582. His goal was to make the works accessible not only to the people of Tuscany, but also to all nationalities traveling throughthe bustling trade city. The collection was displayed to the public on the upper floors of the Uffizi Palace. Bridging to early 20th-century America, Isabella Stewart Gardner was the visionary creator of an intimate private museum in Boston in 1903, intermixing fine and decorative arts. Albert C. Barnes established the Barnes Foundation outside of Philadelphia in 1922, with one of the finest collections of Post-Impressionist and early modern paintings. After substantial controversy, these works were recently relocated to a purposebuilt museum in downtown Philadelphia that displays them in a manner reminiscent of their former home. And the Frick Collection in New York was established in 1935, featuring a premier collection of Old Master and European paintings and decorative arts. A visit there is an exploration through a 20th-century Gilded Age mansion, as the work is installed in the domestic setting of Henry Clay Frick’s former home on Fifth Avenue in New York. THE MIAMI MODEL < C U RAT E D 50 ISSUE ONE | ASPIRE Private museums serve not only to preserve and display the objects on view, but also to present the individual’s vision of how the art should be seen and experienced, as well as to catalog and preserve the taste of the individual collector. The private museum continues to be a key influencer on art in America. The most recent example is the Broad Museum opening in Los Angeles. But the highest concentration of contemporary private museums can be found in Miami.
