Further working with our partners such as
APB and the IABM, ABU-TD will continue to
observe developments, facilitate standardisation
for interoperability and harmonisation, educate
media stakeholders — especially broadcasters — on
the importance of IP in future broadcast media
productions. IP live production will redefine how
outside broadcast operations are carried out.
Closed captions and subtitling in future
media delivery will be another important
aspect to note. They will be offered with
foreign content and for people with
hearing impairments, and can be handled
as bit-mapped characters or coded
characters. A large number of countries
in Asia-Pacific use unique alphabets that
incorporate more than 256 characters. This
is likely to motivate Asia-Pacific to innovate
efficient ways to handle subtitles and
closed captions.

ABU members and Asia-Pacific, we will do the same
for the next wave on IP for live production.
As mentioned above, there are a number of
issues to be resolved, even as SDI continues to
perform and serve broadcasters well. However, there
is no denying that IP offers enormous opportunities
and benefits, including agility, flexibility, the ability to
share and cost savings.
Broadcasters can manage operational cost (Opex)
without heavy capital investments (Capex), enjoy
scalability, operational efficiency, future updates and
ability to work with software-defined networks.
We have also observed that online media being
attacked in many instances in the recent past. This is
a threat to broadcasters who are migrating to online,
especially for those using IP for live production.
Content, which is broadcasters’ most valuable
assets, could be exposed to deliberate attacks, and
broadcasters can be hindered by the inability to
serve due to poor design of IP media networks and
drawn architectures. Broadcasters need to invest in
protecting and mitigating loss due to possible cyberattacks.
At the ABU Technical Department, we also
introduced cybersecurity studies, which were
endorsed by ABU members. We are also working
with other broadcasting unions to address issues
at a global level for media. This requires best
practices, new human resources or experts to handle
