2016 : REBOOTING MINDSET ON IP
Audio too is often ignored with video technologies , but with VR , audio is a key component to make the VR experience work . 2016 showed huge gains with total dimensional sound tied in with processing to match head movements .
V R AND ST O R Y T ELLING As well as its adoption in gaming and simulation , VR is finding a niche in sports event coverage . How successfully VR can be applied as a storytelling medium , though , is something we ’ re going to have to wait a little longer to find out . Sports , after all , is not a story — it ’ s an event with multiple points of interest at any one time . As we stand today , though , because it is not real time , VR is not yet a replacement for traditional live broadcasting , but a complementary stream that offers extra viewer engagement . The bottom line — sports rights-holders still need to figure out how to make money with VR .
Drama , on the other hand , is most definitely a story , and how to embrace the possibilities of VR while leading viewers through a storyline is a real creative challenge . VR may well usher in a different approach to drama ; pioneers will pick up this new medium and find new ways of telling great stories with it .
2 0 1 7 AND B EY O ND “ The amount of content being viewed is exploding and competition is ever fiercer as audiences have yet more viewing choices ,” said Avid ’ s CEO Louis Hernande at IABM ’ s State of the Industry conference at IBC this year . “ Advertising conversion rates are much higher on traditional TV than the new digital platforms , so with the latter , you need to know much more about your audience ; how money is being made in media is changing rapidly .”
Looking forward , all media organisations — whether traditional broadcasters or new media players — will need to be ever more agile and efficient to take advantage of new opportunities . More and more content is being created — the challenge for all is how to manage and monetise it in our ever more diverse world .
