These courses cover a series of techniques, both basic and advanced. Design is emphasized. Utilizing the elements and principles of design, students, with every new project, are asked to explore in the studio and solve design and technical problems. Form follows Function is a concept that is important in jewelry and ceramics. In jewelry, the body is the gallery and each piece must fit a particular part of the body. In ceramics this concept is important when creating a variety of vessels.

There are three additional projects that will continue this year. One is a project that involves literature and the visual arts, a collaboration between Librarian, Pam McGlone and my metal arts students. Another project that has been growing over the last few years, is a vertical garden in the Courtyard, complete with large sculptural metal flowers. My hope is that this garden will incorporate pieces of sculpture in different media, representing classes throughout the Art Department. The third project is student involvement in the Philadelphia Flower Show with the creation of botanical jewelry.
