Ellis Elementary
When spring rolls around at Ellis Elementary, the
annual tradition of track-meet tryouts for sixth graders
begins as they prepare for the annual Lamar network
track meet.
During PE, students try out for events, including the
mile run, 800- and 400-meter relay, 50- and 100-yard
dash, softball throw, soccer kick, jump rope and hulahoop contest. At the meet, the day culminates with an
exciting tug-of-war tournament.
Five north Arlington elementary schools participate
in the track meet at Lamar’s Cravens Field – Ellis,
Larson, Roquemore, Sherrod and Webb. The meet is
the perfect opportunity for sixth graders to interact
with other students who will move to Shackelford and
Nichols junior highs.
Ellis students will be sporting matching T-shirts at the
meet thanks to the work of PE teachers Sue Grossman
and Melissa Ghitis. The two entered a Hildebrand
Orthodontics contest they read about in AISD School
& Family Magazine that offered a $500 sponsorship.
The contest asked how the money would be used
and what kind of positive affect it would have, and
Grossman and Ghitis’ submission won. Ellis students
and staff appreciate the generosity and commitment to
students, family and the community from Hildebrand
Orthodontics.
SUCCESSFUL SPRING AT ELLIS
Spring also means time for showcases and competitions
at Ellis. Students actively participate in Art Club, choir,
Journalism Club, World Languages Club, Student
Council, recorder choir, orchestra and more.
Twenty-seven art students had their work on display in
the Arlington Museum of Art Youth Art Month Show
in early April. Five orchestra students participated in
solo and ensemble contests in mid-April. And many
students participated in the Arlington ISD Media Fair
in late April.
New this year, the Journalism Club has been responsible
for photographing and reporting on school events. Their
biggest project was completing The Talon yearbook.
