Carter

Junior High

The Carter Junior High STEM All-Stars have only been around two years , but they have already made quite an impression . On March 16 , the group was invited to participate in the White House Initiative on Hispanic Education Bright Spots in STEM Google hangout to share best practices from their program .
It wasn ’ t just any hangout – it was alongside other STEM organizations from across the nation , and it was broadcast live and also recorded for viewing nationwide .
Carter STEM was selected to share two unique aspects of its program , including a partnership with LULAC National Educational Service Centers and the GM Foundation , and its success with recruiting a high number of females to participate in STEM . LNESC and the GM Foundation discussed how the Carter STEM program allows their organizations to provide both financial assistance and educational support in STEM education . These partners provide access to supplies , activities and field trips , and with their support , the program has excelled and continues
to create valuable opportunities for Carter students . While historically STEM education and careers are male-dominated , currently 70 percent of Carter STEM members are female . Genedra Trotter , Carter STEM sponsor , said during the webinar the activities and field trips give female students wonderful experiences that translate into them realizing they can be successful in STEM fields .
Participation in the webinar not only provided Carter STEM the chance to gain national attention for its unique opportunities but it also allowed the group to learn new best practices to improve the program in the future .
