Corey Academy
30th Anniversary
Corey Academy celebrated its transition into the new Corey Academy and its 30th anniversary on Oct. 15.
Corey opened its doors for the 1985-1986 school year and has a long-standing tradition of excellence as
special guests Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams and AISD Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos confirmed.
Not only was the event a celebration
of the 30 years of Corey Elementary,
but it was also a welcome for the newly
renovated Corey Academy of Fine
Arts and Dual Language. The AISD
bond program, approved by voters in
May 2014, included the conversion
of two AISD elementary schools into
fine arts and dual language academies
(Roquemore Elementary was converted
to Jones Academy). In this new
academy model, all students who
enter in kindergarten will receive dual
language instruction: language arts
and social studies are taught in English
and math and science are taught in
Spanish. The goal is for the students
to be bilingual by third grade and biliterate by sixth grade. Students also
begin Mandarin Chinese as a foreign
language class when they reach second
grade. In addition to the language
immersion, students at Corey have art,
music, PE, dance, theater and piano
instruction each week.
Corey was honored to celebrate with
so many family members, friends and alumni who came out to celebrate the school’s traditions and see the
results of the recent renovation.
Visit the Corey Academy blog at www.coreyacademy.blogspot.com for the 30th anniversary program of
events, a video of the celebration and some great slideshows of the history of Corey. Applications for 20172018 kindergarten students who wish to attend both Corey and Jones academies are open through Feb. 24 at
www.aisd.net.
