It might be a tad inaccurate to say that Ernestina Willis lives for the annual
Picnic with Parents at Ousley Junior High, but she does have it circled each year
in big red letters on a calendar that hangs on a wall in her home. Willis loves
dressin g up for this themed event, and she said this year was like no other.

The 15 th go-round for this frolicking fun affair featured super heroes, a theme
picked by Ousley art teachers led by Joni Dozier and pieced together by dozens
of art students who draw, stitch, create, paint – you name it – to create a world of
super fantasy.

Parents like Willis who showed up to lunch with their kids were all smiles since
it’s not everyday Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Hawk Girl or Wolverine,
the big side-burned, claw-for-hands X-Man, stroll by snacking on a McDonald’s
Big Mac.
Willis was dressed in her own get-up with a cape, a holdover from Halloween
two years ago.
“I couldn’t come to this without dressing up,” said Willis, whose daughter Stephanie is a seventh grader and didn’t
seem to mind her mother’s attire. “I know how some kids might get a little embarrassed, but we’ve been dressing up
together for so long, that’s not an issue. We just have fun.”
Dozier said the super heroes theme was appropriate because “we’ve had some heroes this year,” she said. “This was
our year of the heroes. We’ve been focused on that all this year so we decided to go with that.”

Standing in front of a lavish stage set of Gotham City’s skyscrapers, Ousley Principal Lora Thurston greeted everyone
during one of the lunches, asking the crowd to give it up in applause for the art teachers and students who made it all
happen.
“We’re just so fortunate to have them and what they do,” Thurston said. “Each year it’s just fabulous what they do.”
Ousley seems to have buy-in not just from the many parents who show up but the faculty and staff, who come in
all sorts of costumes, from Storm of X-Men to Captain America and Iron Man. The Powerpuff Girls even made an
appearance.
Then there was math teacher Scott Jordan, who paraded around the school as “Math Man” with a cape that carried
pencils, rulers, sticky glue, protractors… you get the idea.
Ok. So Math Man has yet to garner an onscreen following.
Still, “I’m a super mathematician able to multiply numbers in a flash,” he said.
As far as Ousley is concerned, there’s nothing more super than that.
