and training of the local community. The
overall Steyn City project has to date
created 9,641 jobs, with the mandate
of involving as many people from the
nearby communities of Diepsloot and
Cosmo City as possible. The clubhouse
project fulfilled this mandate by recruiting
unskilled labour from the communities to
fill the Gabion Baskets that make up the
building’s cladding.
Steyn City also invited artists, many without
formal training, from Diepsloot and Cosmo
City to showcase their talent. The estate
and clubhouse feature magnificent artworks
that lend the project a unique and authentic
flair, and which promote these otherwise
unknown artists.
Award Winning Design
The Steyn City Clubhouse won the Emirates
Glass LEAF Award in the Hospitality Building
category in 2014. The Emirates Glass LEAF
Awards is an annual international architectural
prize. It recognises innovative architectural
design that sets the benchmark for the
international architectural community of the
next generation.
Conclusion
The building is a constant reminder of
the relationship to nature by taking the
user to the edge where the connection with
nature is apparent and unavoidable. The
architecture for the Steyn City golf club
house achieves within the city, a harmony
and continuity with nature. This is a privilege
conventionally reserved for buildings usually
far removed, in an environment far outside
the city limits.
