The materials were carefully considered in order to contrast in texture but harmonize with the context. Design Concept In order to achieve the brief, the SVA International team, headed by Paul Symondson with his more than 30 years of 56 retail experience, came up with a planning proposal of a longitudinal building parallel to the highway. The project contemplated two major anchors, one at each end of the mall. The layout resembled a building opening its ‘arms’ to the public by means of rotating the east and west wings and breaking the one kilometre length of the mall into shorter lengths. The mall circulation was carefully planned, by means of adding kinks and widening portions of the mall, thereby creating promotional space and food courts. These wider spaces were then enhanced by the introduction of natural light using pop up skylights. Matlosana Mall
