but we don’t know the meaning
of reverence. We have built halls of
governance, but we don’t know how
to lead. We have built temporary
structures to keep one another
in, but far too often to keep one
another out. We have neglected the
most sacred of temples, the place
most deserving of reverence and
the clearest guide that can lead us
into a new day. Already present in
our midst are billions of temples,
billions of halls of understanding and
leadership, and doorways longing
to be opened by the only thing that
can: love. Love resides in the temple
of every human being. It rumbles
and quakes all around us, ceaselessly
pushing to the surface. It is the
greatest weapon in our arsenal. It is
more powerful than any armament,
more certain than any governance,
and more inclusive than any religion.
It is universal. It is needed. It is love.
THERE IS A
RUMBLING

This journey begins deep within.
There is a quaking deep within
us that shakes our hearts and our
minds, deep within the caverns of
our psyche. We do not know what
it is, so we fear it.
As we learn to let our own
humanity unfold, all things
of great importance begin to
move within us. This unfolding
is required for our growth, yet
often we are not aware of its
importance to us. As we stand as
witnesses to the preciousness of
life, it rumbles.
There is a change underfoot.
There is a change that is bubbling
madness to the surface of our
world, as the things that have kept
And then, it happens. We feel
its uniqueness, its beauty, its
mystery, and its power. We feel
life. We feel our own life.
here is a rumbling moving
beneath our feet. There is
a rumbling moving within us. There
is a rumbling all around. There
is a rumbling that has caused
humanity to fear all manner of
things. There is a rumbling.

Far too often we neglect to feel
life until it begins to slip away. Far
too often we neglect to look at
the truth of our importance, our
purpose, our goal, and our gift.
Far too often we fear the rumble
and the quake because we have
been taught to stand outside of
the reverence we so desperately
need, fearful of entering its
perfect chamber. Instead of
entering the most sacred of
places, we construct monuments
that represent it.
We have built temples of learning,
but we don’t know how to teach.
We have built temples of worship,
We have separated ourselves
from our selves, and we feel the
rumble. We feel the quake.
We have allowed fear to rule
us, prejudice to blind us, and
ignorance to lead us. We
struggle to comprehend the
rumble, fearfully and ignorantly
believing that is one more thing
to conquer. We feel the quaking
and misunderstand it, believing
instead that we can become more
whole by seeking more, owning
more, wanting more, and doing
more. So we work through the
rumble, and pretend it isn’t there.
In the singular holy moments of
life that make up a lifetime, we
feel the rumble. As we hold the
hand of a loved one and feel the
singular preciousness of their
being, we feel the rumble. As
we witness the decline in the
pristine environments of our
youth, we feel the rumble deep
within, calling for our attention.
As we hear of atrocities willfully
perpetrated upon other human
beings and upon Mother Earth,
we feel the rumble. And we
misunderstand
its deep and
powerful call.
As long as
humanity
chooses to
close it out,
the rumble will
remain. It will
always remain
and it is nothing
to fear. It is the
dawning of a
new embrace
of life, one that
we have feared
and one that
we have longed for. Standing
beneath our feet, hidden below
the surface like an acorn about to
emerge from its protective armor,
there is a big-ness that only love
can create. If we could only see
the strength and determination of
one single acorn as the life within
it cracks open the outer shell that
has held its life within, we would
feel life quake beneath us—a
mighty power that allows a tiny
shelled miracle to push through
the darkness and weight of the
unknown to burst through the
fertile ground of its resting place
to become something greater
than it could have ever imagined.
We too are in the darkness,
and the movement is all around
us, awaiting our invitation to
burst through the darkness of
our thinking to merge with the
life that is about to unfold. It is
the emerging love within every
human heart that calls for us to
embrace its unending, ceaseless
and benevolent power.
