A Step Above Nicolas and Luke Gianni Nicolas and Luke Gianni have a lot in common; they ought to, after all, they’re twins! Both are high academic achievers and fierce athletes with high post-collegiate aspirations, but perhaps their most compelling shared attribute is their eagerness to help those in need. They’ve proven their dedication to service many times while humbly attributing their success, not just to hard work, but to the support of their family, friends, teammates and coaches. Each with a personality and charisma all his own, Nicolas and Luke Gianni are– A Step Above. I received donations of clothing, shoes and money. Many friends, fam- ily members, teammates, and members of the community donated their time and talents to help make this project successful. It was humbling to see the outpouring of love and kindness.” NICOLAS: Which of your many accomplishments are you most proud of? “I am most proud of winning the Nevada Lacrosse State Championship. I love being part of a team and working together toward a common goal. Winning the championship represented years of practice and dedication. I am thankful to have excellent and dedicated coaches, as well as talented and hardworking teammates.” NICOLAS: Has any certain experience or obstacle helped you become a better person? “Working to overcome my shyness has helped me become a stronger person. Over the summer I took an engineering course at Brown University. I was able to meet new people from all over the country. This required me to go a little bit out of my comfort zone; however, I was happy to make some new friends, and I ended up having a great time.” ◆ April/May 2017 LUKE: Have you had to overcome any major challenges? “In the beginning of my sophomore year I broke my ankle at lacrosse practice. I was very disappointed because I had to miss recruiting events and tournaments. This experience helped me realize what a privilege it is to have a healthy body and be able to be active and play sports. I also learned that things always seem to work out, even if it isn’t the way you originally planned.” 57
