The renovation of an old gym with strong ties to the community will now allow the community the opportunity to host Georgia Recreational Sports Association basketball tournaments as the only regulation size gym in Appling County. “Lee and Jeff work well together. We are lucky and blessed to have two great administrators who are masters at their job,” stated Chairman Parker. “Integrity is what makes everything work. I have the utmost faith in both Lee and Jeff’s integrity. If they tell you something you can bank on it,” explained Mayor Rigdon. “Our City and county Managers and the School Superintendent are all natives of Appling County. That’s rare. And we’re fortunate to have such great ‘home grown’ leaders with such great integrity. I don’t think you could go anywhere and find any better leadership than we’ve got.” Lee Lewis and Jeff Baxley are quick to point out that both Appling County and the City of Baxley have elected officials that believe in letting the government structure work by leading and expecting the professional staff to come up with solutions with problems and work together professionally. “Our elected leaders make decisions and stand behind us. That has been one of the most effective and most productive reasons for our success,” stated Jeff Baxley. One of the biggest examples of the community’s cohesiveness is the passing of the last SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax) by a wide majority of voters who said, “YES, we want our community to continue The Water Works Park in downtown Baxley has help bring a revitalization to the downtown area. The park includes an interactive fountain and an amphitheater for events and concerts. moving forward!” Other recent accomplishments are the Water Works Park in downtown Baxley; The Pavilion, a new nursing home; and the renovation of an old gym that will now allow the community the opportunity to host Georgia Recreational Sports Association basketball tournaments as the only regulation size gym in Appling County. “If it’s good for one then it’s good for the other,” stated Mayor Rigdon. He explained that when the City of Baxley was building the new airport terminal and needed funding for the lighting of the driveway the Appling County Commission provided that. Likewise, when the county was looking for land to build a new Health Department the City provided the land. “We have a really good working relationship,” he added. These accomplishments are the result of the community’s city and county officials working together to make the community a better place to live, work and play for all its citizens and newcomers alike. Jeff Baxley and Lee Lewis both believe it is important to celebrate accomplishments in order to show the community that their leadership is working together for the betterment of the community instead of serving their own self-interests. “Everybody is working together in unison,” Lewis Parker, Appling County Commission Chair 86 Appling County Living
