Culture Builds Community Showcasing the Appling County Arts Council Story by Mary Ann Ellis Over the past five years, the Arts Council has put over $130,000 into art related events and performances for the community and received nearly $70,000 in revenue from ticket sales. n October 17-19, 2014, Laurie Jo Upchurch’s musical play “In the Pines” entertained many of Appling County’s citizens and visitors in the fine arts auditorium at the high school. Four performances provided ample opportunity for people to work around football games, opening day of hunting season, and various other conflicting schedules. The play highlights Appling County history and is based loosely on Caroline Miller’s Pulitzer-Prize-winning book, Lamb in His Bosom. Miller wrote the book by sitting at a table in Barnes Drug Store and collecting stories from local people as she drank Coca-Cola and ate salted peanuts. She also ventured out in the byways to visit and hear stories of various ancestors. As she traveled the countryside buying a chicken from one farmer and some tomatoes from another, they told her their families’ stories. She then collected those stories into a book; the rest is history. Showcasing Your Community’s Personality 59
