Operations Support Division - Traffic

• Watch UR BAC campaign sought to address dangers related to impaired driving .
• Commercial vehicle enforcement was a primary focus on area roadways .
• Speeding and intersection violations were a focus for traffic enforcement efforts .
The Traffic Unit consists of Motors , Crash Investigators , Commercial Vehicle Inspectors , Traffic Enforcement Officers , and DWI Enforcement Officers . Impaired driving continued to be the focus in 2016 . Officer David Hinson recorded 172 arrests for DWI in 2016 . The DWI Enforcement Unit partnered with the Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Service to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving . Officer Stacie Brown who routinely leads presentations to youth served as a keynote speaker during the “ Watch UR BAC ” campaign . Teens go through DWI simulators , field sobriety testing with “ drunk goggles ,” and learn about alcohol poisoning .
The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit conducted 2,169 inspections of commercial vehicles to ensure vehicles were in compliance with state and federal safety regulations . There were 524 vehicles placed out of service which means the vehicles could not be driven on the city ’ s streets until safety repairs were made . Inspectors also recorded 3,936 violations on commercial vehicles . The unit also completed three reconstructions of commercial vehicle fatality crashes in 2016 .
Neighborhood speeding and red light signal violators continued
to be a concern voiced by residents last year . Traffic enforcement efforts were concentrated on areas of the city where the highest percentage of crashes were located . Officers conducted specialized enforcement details coupled with educational awareness campaigns in school zones , residential neighborhoods , and area freeways .
