The program has a strong history of training residents prior to entry into specialty training in many areas, including radiology, anesthesiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, internal medicine, and military medicine. For those residents who are undecided on a choice of specialty, the transitional year residency program provides a broad range of excellent training experiences, including active participation in patient care and teaching conferences and an opportunity for selfstudy. Transitional Year residents are fully integrated into the teaching program and work closely with categorical residents in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, and orthopedics. Responsibilities and authority for patient care in the inpatient and outpatient settings are identical to that of their categorical peers. Anantha Padmanabhan, MD Program Director The Ohio State University School of Medicine recognizes community faculty preceptors who elevate the quality of teaching through many years of experience and dedication to Medical Education. • Dr. Ralph Ballenger, Associate Program Director OB/GYN, Received the Lifetime Achievement Award • Dr. Michael Corriveau, Transitional Year Program Director, Received the distinguished educator award Other Awards • Jeff Backes, MD, PGY4 Orthopedics, was named the 2012 recipient of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons • Our Transitional Year graduates possess a solid knowledge base and are well-prepared to progress professionally. Many of our graduates return to Mount Carmel and become members of the teaching faculty or Medical Staff following completion of specialty training. Seven months of core medical rotations are required by the ACGME for all Transitional Year residents. These include general internal medicine, critical care, emergency medicine, and general surgery. Aside from these requirements, residents may elect rotations in internal medicine subspecialties, general and subspecialty surgery, anesthesiology, obstetrics, orthopedics, pediatrics, and radiology.
