FOUNDATIONAL LITERACY AND SKILLS GED TEST PREPARATION The foundational literacy and skills courses provide the building blocks for a solid base aimed ultimately at career development and advancement. Classes include practical context-based learning preparing students for everyday situations in the U.S. Overall the curriculum encompasses: employability, health and wellness, consumer education, parenting and family skills, math and technology concepts, the rights and responsibilities of citizens, multicultural awareness and appreciation, and participation in the democratic process. This program supports students working to obtain an official high school credential. Students enter the GED program with a wide range of educational backgrounds. Through the Plazas Comunitarias Carlos Rosario Program, students are able to earn elementary and middle school certificates thanks to a partnership with the Mexican Consulate. CITIZENSHIP TEST PREPARATION This class ensures eligible students will be able to pass the official naturalization test with confidence, covering topics such as U.S. history, government, the Constitution, the democratic process, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. STUDENT SUCCESS Nicodeme Ekani came from Cameroon in September 2013 with high ambitions: he wants to become a doctor by age 27. He came to the U.S. to reunite with his mother and to pursue his educational goals. Since he arrived, Nicodeme has quickly been moving forward. He graduated from ESL level 8 at the Carlos Rosario School and is currently enrolled in the School’s GED program, an essential step for getting into college. He said, “Carlos Rosario has impacted my life very much…I use my English language almost everywhere!” LITERACY (ORIENTATION A AND B) Orientation classes offer English instruction with additional learning supports for students who require intensive instruction. Content covered includes learning the English alphabet, phonological skills, and the production of sounds, words and sentences. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) COURSES (LEVELS 1–8) NICODEME EKANI ESL classes with integrated life skills instruction provide students with the knowledge needed to gain employment; pursue higher education; advocate for personal and family needs; and become more confident, involved members of society. Content ESL classes in health and family literacy offer topic-specific language instruction. TECHNOLOGY ESSENTIALS The Computer Literacy class focuses on computer skills such as how to use an email account and the basic features of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel as well as how to navigate the internet. In addition to studying, Nicodeme recently took a food service position with higher pay and more benefits moving up from his previous job at a fast food chain. “All I can say is me being here in the U.S. is a great opportunity to succeed in life. I have all the tools, teachers, counselors, family and surroundings I need.” In the Microsoft Office Applications class students gain more advanced skills in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access) to enhance their ability to excel in the workplace. 8 9
