SCHOOL GARDEN
TAKES ROOT
DR. RYAN MONROE
CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICER
“The school garden is connected
to academic learning in many ways
including GED science, culinary arts
food foundations, and more broadly,
social responsibility. Also many of
our students come from agricultural
backgrounds, so this is a way to connect
their prior knowledge to the school.”
This year the School planted its first garden
thanks in large part to the student government
representatives who built and are maintaining
the plots. ESL health classes toured the garden
and discussed advantages of growing food.
Many seeds were donated by staff members and
produce from the garden was used in special
meals served by the school cafeteria. Harvested
vegetables and herbs were also sold to staff
members throughout the summer.
“The school garden is connected to academic
learning in many ways including GED science,
culinary arts food foundations, and more broadly,
social responsibility. Also many of our students
come from agricultural backgrounds, so this is
a way to connect their prior knowledge to the
school,” said Dr. Ryan Monroe, Chief Academic
Officer.
During school year 2014-2015 the garden
will continue as an extracurricular activity
for students. Future plans include providing
workshops for students to learn more on topics
like container gardening, composting and
nutrition.
