Career Training Student Highlight Eluvia Confesor came to the United States in the early 1990s leaving her home in Guatemala and her elderly parents with the hope of being able to better support her family from abroad. Eluvia first started studying English at the Carlos Rosario School 21 years ago, and after taking a hiatus to focus on raising her children, in 2010, Eluvia decided to return to her dream of becoming a nurse. Eluvia re-enrolled in the School, this time in the Nurse Aide Career Training Program. “I want to thank our dedicated teacher Doris Medina for the tremendous work she does in training us to be the CNA’s she wants us to be, and …in preparing us to be someone for ourselves and our families,” said Eluvia. Having completed the Nurse Aide Training class and passing the official certification exam in spring 2011, Eluvia is now a certified and experienced nurse aide. With the help of instructor Doris Media, Eluvia secured a position as a Patient Care Technician at the Washington Hospital Center where she says she uses the skills learned in the Nurse Aide Training class everyday. Eluvia sees her current position as a stepping stone to further opportunities in the nursing field, and she hopes to continue studying to become a registered nurse. Career Training advisory committees Career Training programs are enhanced by valuable insights about industry needs and expectations from corporate advisory committees representing the culinary arts, information technology (IT), and healthcare industries. This year committee members gave guidance on outreach materials and workforce web page materials as well as provided input on fundraising strategies and design ideas for the new workforce expansion building. The IT advisory committee focused on integrating industry trends into the curriculum and developing a fund to provide stipends for student internships. The healthcare committee evaluated strategies for integrating new DC healthcare regulations into the nurse aide training curriculum.
