Culinary Arts Institute (CIA) visits the School to El Salvador at an event hosted by The Carlos Rosario School. •Carlos Rosario School held a reception celebrating Mayor Vincent Gray’s Latino political appointees, which included Gustavo Velasquez, member of the School’s Board of Trustees. Panel Discussions, Committee Involvement, and Workshops Presented •In February 2011, Allison R. Kokkoros participated as a guest on the WHUT Let’s Talk Education series on adult education and family literacy. •On May 5, 2011, Sonia Gutierrez participated with U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis in a panel discussion titled “Creating Career Pathways and Building Pipelines to PostSecondary Education for Latino Adult Learners.” •In May 2011, Allison R. Kokkoros participated in a panel discussion of the movie, “Welcome to Shelbyville” coordinated by the ITVS Community Cinema [DC]. •Sonia Gutierrez is a member of the CCDC Advisory Committee/Kitchen Cabinet, a Board Member for the Hogar Hispano, Inc. (NCLR), and in April 2011, was appointed by Mayor Vincent C. Gray as a member of the Commission on Latino Community Development. •Allison R. Kokkoros continues to serve in a volunteer capacity as Commissioner of the Middle States Accreditation Association, Member and Secretary of the DC Association of Chartered Public Schools (DCACPS), and Member and Secretary of the Carlos Rosario Educational Foundation Board of Directors. •Miguel Jimenez and Elda Gonzalez presented about the Spanish GED program at the COABE (Commission on Adult Basic Education) annual conference in San Francisco. •Jennifer Riggins Garcia presented “Building Confidence in Students’ Listening Comprehension” at the MAACCE (Maryland Association for Adult and Community Continuing Education) annual conference in Baltimore. •Sheryl Sherwin, Jennifer Riggins Garcia and Carole Fuller presented “Web 2.0 Tools for the Classroom” at the Spring WATESOL (Washington Area Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) conference. •In May 2011, Aracelly Watts, Workforce Program Manager, served as a panelist for the Washington Grantmakers’ Working Group on Aging’s program, in the presentation titled “Quality Jobs/Quality Care: Increasing the Supply of Professional Direct Care Workers”. Workforce Development Accomplishments •In February 2011, our school was selected as the location for the District of Columbia’s National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP®) examination. Nurse Aide candidates across the District now come to the School yearround to complete this two component certification exam. •In April 2011, representatives from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) announced a matching scholarship for an accomplished Carlos Rosario culinary arts student to attend this elite Culinary School. For two consecutive years, the CIA will match funds raised by the Carlos Rosario School to support one student pursuing an associate’s degree in culinary arts at The Culinary Institute of America. •On April 5, 2011, the Carlos Rosario School was honored to host three chefs from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). More than 100 students and community members participated. •During the Carlos Rosario School spring break in April 2011, eight culinary arts students participated in a shadow week at four area restaurants.
