Unique Accomplishments School Staff Awards and Recognitions Principal Allison R. Kokkoros receives congratulations as Principal of the Year •Mayor Vincent Gray honored Sonia Gutierrez as the “International Woman of the Year.” •The Greater Washington Urban League honored Sonia Gutierrez with the “Community Service” Award at its annual gala. •FOCUS honored Sonia Gutierrez with a “Founder’s Award.” •Sonia Gutierrez was appointed as commissioner to the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs. •At the DC Charter School STARS Tribute event, Allison R. Kokkoros was honored as “Most Outstanding Adult Education Principal.” •Academic Site Coordinator Karen Whitehurst earned a Master’s of Education Degree in Higher Education Leadership and Administration. •The School honored Mr. Emerterio Herce for his 35 years of service as a GED teacher. Unique Student Successes •Also at the STARS Tribute event, two Carlos Rosario students were honored for their hard work and dedication. Maribel Morales was named “Most Outstanding Adult Student” and John Castillo earned a $1,000 scholarship as a finalist for “Most Outstanding High School Graduate.” The Tribute, hosted at the Dorothy I. Height Community Academy Public Charter School, was the first annual recognition event organized by the DC Association of Chartered Public Schools. •Freddy Hernandez, Susan Tanseco’s ESL level 1 student, was selected by the Park Hyatt Washington, DC to receive the Hystar of the Year award. The Park Hyatt recognized his enthusiasm and energy for his role as a cook with this prestigious organization. •Carlos Rosario School GED English student Francisco “Danny” Martinez was named the Washington, DC citywide valedictorian and also achieved a perfect reading score on the GED test. •Fernanda Lopez, Carlos Rosario culinary arts and GED Spanish graduate, achieved a perfect score on the writing portion of the GED. •Thirty-five Spanish GED students completed the requirements for elementary and/or middle school diplomas through a partnership between the Carlos Rosario School and the Mexican Embassy. •Carlos Rosario School distributed $30,450.00 in scholarships to 12 students/graduates who are pursuing further academic studies at colleges and universities around the country. Special Guests and Visitors •The Carlos Rosario School welcomed visitors from the Maya Angelou Public Charter School and the Community College of DC as well as delegations from Panama and El Salvador who were interested in learning more about the school’s award-winning model for adu YX
