CRACKING THE CODE – IBC Anchoring-to-concrete provisions of the 2012 IBC code Changes to Adhesive Anchor System Design Requirements Prior to ACI 318-11, the anchoring-to-concrete provisions in Appendix D did not include adhesive anchor systems. Instead, provisions for testing, evaluation and design of adhesive anchor systems were given in the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria AC308. Beginning with ACI 318-11, adhesive anchor systems were included into the anchoring-to-concrete provisions of the ACI 318 code. Adhesive anchor provisions are now given in ACI 318-11 Part D.5.5 and ACI 318-14 Section 17.4.5. The provisions and equations for calculating bond strength formerly given in AC308 have been removed, and now the only provisions and equations for calculating bond strength are given in the ACI 318 anchoring-to-concrete provisions. Changes to Characteristic Bond Strength Values Beginning with adhesive anchor ICC-ES Evaluation Service Reports (ESRs) having 2012 IBC recognition, the characteristic bond strength values (τk) that are given in the tables containing “BOND STRENGTH DESIGN INFORMATION” have been revised from the values shown in previous ESRs. Testing per the American Concrete Institute test standard ACI 355.4 and the International Code Council-Evaluation Service Acceptance Criteria AC308 now requires the maximum short-term/maximum long-term concrete temperatures for “Temperature Range A” to be 130°F/110°F, respectively. These temperatures have been increased from the previous “Temperature Range A” maximum short-term/maximum long-term temperatures of 110°F/80°F, respectively. The characteristic bond strength values (τk) based on these temperatures can therefore be lower than values published in previous ESRs. Adhesive Anchor Design Beginning with adhesive systems having recognition under the 2012 IBC, bond strength calculations will be performed using the anchoring-to-concrete provisions given in ACI 318. The ACI 318 provisions are used in conjunction with the provisions and tables contained in the adhesive anchor ESR. The characteristic bond strength values (τk) that are given in the tables containing “BOND STRENGTH DESIGN INFORMATION” have been revised from the values shown in previous ESR versions. The maximum short-term/maximum long-term concrete temperatures for “Temperature Range A” have been increased to 1300 F/1100 F, respectively. The characteristic bond strength values (τk) based on these temperatures are typically lower compared to values shown in previous ESR versions. PROFIS Anchor uses these revised bond strength values to perform bond strength calculations when ACI 318-14, ACI 318-11 and ACI 318-08 have been selected as a design option. PROFIS Anchor also uses the ACI 31811 D.5.5 provisions to perform bond strength calculations when ACI 318-08 has been selected as a design option because the AC308 bond strength provisions formerly used are not compliant with jurisdictions and projects using the 2012-and-later IBC.
