New Oxnard College Institute by Ken Sherwood, Oxnard College Dean of Liberal Studies Happy Hour Monday-Friday 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oxnard College is expanding its commitment to being a center for community and culture by creating the Oxnard College Institute for Latino performing Arts. Capitalizing on its beautiful grounds and facilities (Oxnard College is already home to the Strawberry Festival, Ballet Folklórico Mestizo, Tardeada, the Cinco De Mayo Festival) the college plans to showcase its state-of-theart Performing Arts Center. Rick Najera The brainchild of Oxnard College President, Dr. Richard Duran, the Institute plans to bring together multiple forms of performing arts that represent the culture and tradition of the Oxnard Community. Plans for the Institute include developing a Mariachi Studies program as part of the Music Department, reestablishing Theater Arts, a permanent home for the Ballet Folklórico, and integration with the College’s TV/Film program. Asked about his role as the new Creative Director of the Institute, Rick said, “I’m honored to mentor and teach performing arts with an emphasis in culture and inclusion. This is a chance to pass on what I have learned to a new generation. Oxnard has great potential to be a national training ground for performers and artists. I’m merely the start . I look forward to bringing arts to this community that reflects Oxnard.” The Institute will also feature a lecture/interview series that will bring prominent Latino artists to Oxnard College to discuss the influence of Latino culture on Arts and Entertainment. The “Latino Thought Makers” series will give Oxnard residents the opportunity to meet some of Hollywood’s most talented artists in their own community.
