32 SMALL GRAINS - SPRING WHEAT

Should I Spray My Small Grain With A Fungicide ?

Diseases have significantly affected small grains in recent years . Moist cool weather has favored development of crown rust in oats and fusarium head blight in barley and wheat ( as well as other less common diseases ).
Timely applications of fungicides on oats have meant the difference of a 100 + yield bushel advantage in some instances . The ideal time to apply a fungicide is at flag leaf to protect the flag leaf . Rust can develop quickly , so act quickly or you ’ ll miss the opportunity . Scout for rust in the lower canopy and only spray if disease is present . Spraying unnecessarily will speed the development of fungicide resistance , rendering them useless .
