Editor’s view
Africa’s new dawn
With more than a billion people, inestimable natural resources and
entrepreneurial zeal, the continent is truly a global player. Seven of the
world’s fastest-growing economies are in Africa, consistently enjoying
between five per cent and eight per cent growth each year. Africa’s new
middle classes have embraced the digital age, and African countries are
partners of choice for global investors.
The gospel song, Africa’s New Dawn, rings true, starting with: “Africa,
Africa, oh mother Africa, A land so rich and blessed by God. A land full
of natural resources, diverse flora and fauna, from the Rock of Gibraltar
in the North to the Atlantic Ocean in the South. Gulf of Guinea in the
west, to the horn of Africa in the east. Africa, mother Africa. How richly
endowed you are.”

CREDITS
The recent upward progress in a number of sub-Saharan African countries warrants
tempered optimism, and our recent special issue showcasing Africa’s Top 10 projects of
2015 serves to highlight the role architecture and construction has played in this trend.
Challenges remain, but these should not overshadow the diversity of accomplishments
and compelling stories from the continent, ones which we will endeavour to continue
showcasing in this issue and in future issues of African Design Magazine. AD
