Geographic photographers do not crop their photos he said .
Adrian said , “ Cropping is forbidden . Cropping is crapping .”
He encouraged guests to train their eye to crop for the rule of thirds while they are shooting to avoid having to edit later .
“ An editor sits in his basement in a dark room eating donuts and cold coffee . Photographers get to travel the world and see exciting people and places ,” Adrian said .
JIM NAPOLI
Also aboard the National Geographic Endeavor was Lindblad Expeditions video chronicler , Jim Napoli . Napoli has been creating documentaries of the weekly voyages in the Galápagos for over 15 years . He lugged his tripod and camera on and off the zodiacs , making sure to document the landings of the guests on all of the islands . He filmed animal interactions , interviewed guests on the trail and then came back each evening to edit his footage .
Underwater photographer and videographer Jason Heilmann filmed the deep water snorkeling excursions using a weighted belt to dive deep to capture whitetipped reef sharks , chocolate chip starfish and bumphead parrotfish to show guests who did not snorkel the abundant sea life in the Galápagos water depths .
The experience as a Grosvenor Teacher Fellow reaffirmed my belief in the power of experiential education and bringing students to places they haven ’ t been before to reflect and learn more about themselves . Collaborating with our World Languages department chair , I have organized a spring break digital media trip to Costa Rica this spring for students to experience another culture while capturing it in a reflective , meaningful way . Before the trip , we are working with the 20 students on identifying what cultural element they ’ d like to focus on documenting while we are there and teaching them the videography , photography and interviewing skills needed to do so .
New York Times columnist David Brooks writes about the importance of cultivating “ eulogy virtues ” in students , and not just “ resume virtues ” in his book “ The Road to Character .”
“ The resume virtues are the skills you bring to the marketplace ,” Brooks said . “ The eulogy virtues are the ones that are talked about at your funeral – whether you were kind , brave , honest or faithful . Were you capable of deep love ?”
I believe experiential education helps to build empathy toward others , thus building eulogy virtues in our students , and I look forward to providing more opportunities for students to go out of their familiar waters to learn and grow .
