Jackson County, IN
Jackson County offers big adventure and
there’s no better time to enjoy it than this fall!
Beautiful forests, a national wildlife
refuge and a state recreation area
offer miles of hiking, mountain biking
and horseback riding trails, as well
as fishing, hunting and camping
opportunities.
Fall foliage is at its best in Jackson
County, with beautiful vistas, gorgeous
peaks and rolling hills. Skyline Drive,
one of the highest points in the county,
offers many vistas for a nearly 360 degree
view of the county’s fall masterpieces.
A fire tower is on the property and
beckons to be climbed. Multiple hiking,
biking and horseback riding trails are
featured on and around Skyline Drive
in the Jackson-Washington State Forest,
near Vallonia. Offering camping, a
picturesque lake and even cabins, is
Starve Hollow State Recreation Area.
Fishing, hiking and boating are offered
and there’s a Halloween party!

The Muscatatuck National Wildlife
Refuge, Seymour, offers nearly 8,000
acres of wetlands for migrating birds.
Hundreds of species make their home
at the Refuge, including bald eagles and
even a bobcat or two. Several hiking
trails are offered, as are many chances
to experience wildlife. An interpretive
center and bookstore is a must see. In
October, stop by the Refuge for Log Cabin
Day and see the bald eagle’s nest. The
Muscatatuck Wildlife Refuge celebrates
50 years in 2016, so make sure to say
“Happy Anniversary.”
A portion of the Hoosier National Forest
makes its home in Jackson County and
is like a little piece of heaven to the
outdoor enthusiast. Horse camps are
available and there are many, many
trails for horseback riding, hiking, biking
and becoming one with nature.
