THE KATHIE AND STEVE MARKEL LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim courses are based on a logical, six-level progression that helps swimmers of varying ages and abilities develop their water safety, survival and swim skills. Ages: 6-8 • $85 JCC members • $135 non-members • $72 for children in JCC Kids’ Place Level 1: Learn to Swim Fundamentals For beginner swimmers Skills to be taught include: entering and exiting the water, blowing bubbles, bobbing, retrieving submerged objects, front and back gliding, back floating, rolling from front to back, treading water, alternating simultaneous arm and leg actions on front and back, combining arm and leg actions on front and back and age-appropriate water safety topics. Skills to be taught include: entering the water, headfirst entries, bobbing while moving toward safety, rotary breathing, back and survival floating, changing from vertical to horizontal position on front and back, treading water, flutter and dolphin kicking on front, scissors and breaststroke kicking, front crawling, elementary backstroke and age-appropriate water safety topics. This class provides further coordination and refinement of strokes building on the skills in Level 4. Skills to be taught include: shallowangle diving from the side then gliding and beginning a front stroke, tuck and pike surface diving, front flip turns and backstroke flip turns while swimming, front and back crawling, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, sculling and ageappropriate water safety topics. Skills to be taught include: headfirst entries from the side in compact and stride positions, swimming underwater, feetfirst surface diving, survival swimming, open turning on front and back, treading water using two different kicks, front and back crawling, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, butterfly, flutter and dolphin kicking on back and ageappropriate water safety topics. This class is for the child who has successfully completed all previous levels or has been on a summer or winter swim team and is looking to improve swimming technique and gain endurance. Level 6 focuses on preparing participants for more advanced courses, such as year round competitive swimming, synchronized swimming or dive team, and includes the following water safety topics: Fitness Swimmer, Personal Water Safety and Fundamentals of Diving.
