The Historian (cont.)

“You see D-dad…” I stuttered trying to find the words.

“Spit it out, my boy!” he shouted.

“I don’t want to be in the army.” I blurted out. He stared at me. I couldn’t tell if he was going to explode or not. Is he just in shock?

“Finally!” he smiled. “I don’t understand why you have stayed there so long.”

“W-what?!?” I was now the one in shock. My Dad got up from his desk and wrapped me in a strong hug chuckling loudly.

“My boy, I don’t know why you have stayed in the army for so long. You were so unhappy, everyone could tell.”

“I did it because you wanted me to and if I didn’t I was afraid you would not call me your son.”

My Dad let go of me and stared into my eyes.

“You will always be my son! Nothing would change that. We are blood, Galan. Whether you want to be a solider or florist, you will be my son.”

“I want to be a historian, not a florist, Dad.” I laughed.

“Thank the Gods, I am allergic to pollen.” We both laughed. My Dad sat down at his desk getting out paper work. “And who the heck would disown their own offspring because they didn’t want to be in the profession their parent was good at? That’s just idiotic! Now go write down the history of this great world and be who you want to be, my son. Nobody else but who you are.”

That was when my life changed. I didn’t have to train constantly. I didn’t have to deal with Rathal anymore. Instead, I got to be surrounded by books filled with knowledge. I got to spend time with Nexxis, who soon became my wife. I was recently promoted to Head Historian. I am currently reorganizing the whole barracks to make history and knowledge easier to find for all of

the planet. I lived in fear of being disowned by my father, and I let that control me. Don’t let fear stop you from being happy. Be yourself.

"Don't let fear stop you from being happy. Be yourself."
