Interview by : Janice Kortkamp
I interviewed Okba Douli of Nirvana Salon in Homs to find out about the tattoo industry in war torn Syria on a recent visit . It was my second trip there as a tourist in 2016 after researching it for several years . Over the course of that research I had fallen in love with the place ; its history , culture , and beauty and it might sound crazy but I just had to go and see it for myself , so with the support of my family did just that in May . But it was wanting to spend time again with the friendly and philosophical people who greeted me with “ You are most welcome in Syria ” wherever I went , while inviting me to share coffee or a meal or to smoke sheesha ( a sweet tobacco inhaled through water pipes ) who brought me back in October .
