July 3 - 7 ADVANCED MENTORED STUDY PROGRAM

SKILL LEVEL : IV , PORTFOLIO REVIEW REQUIRED
CONCEPT : This one-week , advanced painting and critique workshop , the last in this three-year mentored study , explores the strengths and limitations of current work and practice in order to re-energize them . Students have a workspace and all approaches are welcome . Guidance with making choices and expanding skills and resources supports artists ’ artistic trajectories . The workshop is equally divided between critiques and working sessions with emphasis on investigating issues that come up during discussions . Participants should expect to work outside of workshop hours . This workshop is for artists who have considerable painting experience , especially those familiar with contemporary practices and theory .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : You are welcome to use materials of your choice . Typically , students use paint , charcoal or enamel on canvas , but there are no limitations . Feel free to bring works already in progress or start with new work during the workshop . Drying time and size should be considered in relation to shipping .
ACTIVITIES : This workshop is primarily focused on studio time supported by slide presentations , discussions and critiques driven by instructor questions and students ’ paintings . Readings and short daily writing assignments are also part of the course work .
FACULTY :
Enrique Martínez Celaya ’ s work has been exhibited internationally and is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art , Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum der bildenden Kunste in Leipzig , Germany . Among other awards , he has received the J . Paul Getty Trust Fund for Visual Arts . He was the National Artist Award Honoree at Anderson Ranch in 2007 and has served on the Board of Trustees . In 2016 , he was named Dartmouth ' s Roth Distinguished Visiting Scholar .
