CONCEPT : Embark on an immersive three-year journey designed to expand the scope of your clay knowledge and develop a critical eye regarding a rigorous studio practice . Renowned practitioners Chris Gustin and Randy Johnston worked with the Ranch to design this three-year curriculum for advanced potters , sculptors and ceramists who are interested in a sustained mentored study experience . The course includes studio work , discussions and critiques . In addition to the summer workshop , you participate in a mid-year review as well as individual mentoring on a bi-monthly basis .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use and work with materials , clays and firing temperatures with which they are comfortable . You also discuss strategies for clays and glazes with the instructors .
ACTIVITIES : We engage in an interactive , hands-on setting comprised of formal demonstration , slide shows , group and individual discussions . Each student creates work with the faculty to establish a path and direction he or she would like to pursue .
FACULTY :
Chris Gustin received his M . F . A . from Alfred University and taught for many years at University of Massachusetts , South Dartmouth . He is a full-time studio artist making large-scale sculptural vessels and pots . Chris was recently inducted into the International Academy of Ceramics , and in 2016 , the American Crafts Council honored him as an Artist Fellow .

Randy Johnston has been working in clay for 40 years , and shares a studio with Jan McKeachie-Johnston where they enjoy their love of wood-fired kilns . He is now a full-time studio artist after a long teaching career at the University of Wisconsin , River Falls . Randy received his M . F . A . from Southern Illinois University and is a two-time recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant .
