ArtBots : explorations in robotics & programming
Caroline Hanson
Ages : 9 - 12 / 9am - 3pm
CONCEPT : Explore the world of robotics and build your own robot ! This workshop is ideal for budding builders and engineers . Students discover the world of autonomous robots , programming and mechanical engineering to design and build art robots using the LEGO Education EV-3 Mindstorms platform and the Hummingbird Robotics Kit , a new product from Carnegie Mellon ’ s CREATE Lab . We integrate arts and crafts with engineering education . Learn the basics of programming and how to build simple , structurally sound robots while at the same time expressing your artistic side by personalizing the robots with felt , feathers , glitter and more ! We even add attachments with markers and brushes to create designs , signs and other robot art .
CAROLINE HANSON has been an educator for more than 25 years , combining her humanities background with a passion for STEM education to create enriched classroom experiences using LEGO Mindstorms robotics , WeDo and hands-on problem-solving activities . She currently teaches at Aspen Middle School , coaches FIRST LEGO League teams , coordinates a regional robotics tournament , and serves on the LEGO Education Advisory Panel as a middlegrade educator .

Adventures in Game Design

CONCEPT : Unlock the secrets of video game design and create your own games and animations ! Using the Scratch software platform , we explore the basics of game design , from character and level design to simple movement and enemy mechanics and health . Scratch is a block-based programming language , which allows even those who have never coded before to start wrapping their minds around the concepts and tools available . Students make mazes , platformers , quiz games , pong , fighting games and more . Each project blends technical skills with creative challenges , allowing students to make games that appeal to their personal interests and enjoyment . You leave the workshop with a personal login that allows you to continue working on and playing your games at home !
ELAZAR ABRAHAM is a freelancer and digital creative professional from New York . After graduating with a degree in New Media and minors in Biology and Visual Arts at SUNY Purchase , he went on to lead bike trips for teens around the country and teach digital arts to children across the Westchester , N . Y ., area before coming to Anderson Ranch Arts Center . Elazar ’ s work has been shown in festivals and fabricated internationally .

Food Truck Ceramics

Ages : 9 - 12 / 1pm - 4pm
CONCEPT : Up-and-coming foodies need look no further than this enticing , dynamic workshop that explores the intersection of creativity , cuisine , culture and ceramics ! Students dream up their ideal menu as we create food out of clay . Menu items may include tacos , popsicles , grilled cheese or a slice of cherry pie . We then take time to make more traditional ceramic serving items such as cups , bowls , plates and silverware . While the clay pieces are in the kiln , students design their own food truck logos , hand printed aprons , and uniquely written chalkboard menus . Let ’ s create some culinary art !
HILARY FORSYTH is the Art Director at the Aspen Community School , where she has taught all ages for the past 14 years . She has received the Patricia C . Moore Outstanding Educator Award as well as the Mary Ellen Nix Excellence in Art Teaching Award . She illustrated the BearBop Press children ’ s books Family Field Guide Series featuring the following volumes : Rocky Mountain Mammals , Rocky Mountain Plants , Rocky Mountain Birds and Rocky Mountain Bugs .
