CONCEPT : Expand your artistic skills and imagination to create a powerful display of KAPOW ! In this fun and exciting workshop , we consider the unique traits that make us fly : kindness , intelligence , nutrition , love and strength , among others . What makes a superhero super duper ? As we examine the illustrations of Nicole Gogolak in the children ’ s book , How to be a Super-Duper Superhero we begin to create our own heroic characters through drawings , paintings , and even a sculptural version of our own masked marvels ! We wrap up the course by donning personally created capes for all to see .
NICOLE NAGEL GOGOLAK received her M . F . A . in fiber from the Cranbrook Academy of Art . She is a locallybased artist who works in a variety of mediums including encaustic , resin and aluminum . Nicole is an Adjunct Professor at Colorado Mountain College and has also taught at the Wyly Community Art Center , Anderson Ranch Arts Center and Aspen Country Day School .
CONCEPT : Join the team as we design an ultraimaginative float for Aspen ’ s Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Parade ! Lend your creativity and skills to help win the title of “ Best Children ’ s Float .” We begin by drafting a master plan , and then spend the week sculpting , painting , gluing and decorating props to dazzle the crowds on this fun national holiday . To top it all off students create costumes to wear while walking alongside the float in the Aspen Fourth of July Parade .
KATHERINE BELL has worked with communities in the Bay Area , South America , Minnesota and her hometown of Aspen , Colo ., engaging children through art . She is currently the Children ’ s Program and Outreach Manager for Anderson Ranch Arts Center .
CONCEPT : Conceptualize , craft and create fun LEGO projects with friends in this workshop , which explores the unique ways in which LEGO can be used to build one-ofa-kind artworks ! At the beginning of the week , we craft wearable LEGO art in the form of jewelry , keychains and charms . We then move on to discover the world of robotics and programming using the LEGO WeDo platform . Students construct and program autonomous robots by using LEGO parts , sensors , motor and LEGO WeDo software . We even take time to film short movies of our robotic creations using iPad camera technology . Don ’ t miss out on this opportunity to make multidisciplinary artistic creations with LEGO as your medium !
CAROLINE HANSON has been an educator for more than 25 years , combining her humanities background with a passion for STEM education to create enriched classroom experiences using LEGO Mindstorms robotics , WeDo and hands-on problem-solving activities .
