Monster Mash
Sherri Kuecker
Ages : 6 - 8 / 9am - 12pm
CONCEPT : Unleash your imagination and go on an adventure to where the wild things live ! In this multimedia workshop , we tap into our creative side to craft monsters of all shapes and sizes . Students begin the week by sketching out kooky creatures with colored pencils , watercolors and pastels . We then bring our favorites to life using hand sewing and printmaking techniques . Students make a family of marvelous monsters in soft sculpture materials including felt , fabric , frills and stuffing . We even take time to make clothing for our monster friends to wear using traditional block printing techniques . Finally , we make sure our monsters are well fed by creating a plate , bowl and cup out of clay perfect for mini monster meals !
SHERRI KUECKER received her Masters in Education and School Counseling from Lamar University in Texas . She has taught students of all ages for the past 22 years and currently teaches at the Heritage Academy in Arizona . Sherri formerly worked as the Children ’ s Program Coordinator at Anderson Ranch Arts Center .

Clay in the Kitchen

CONCEPT : Create your very own ceramic dishes when you jump into the world of clay and learn the fundamentals of making pottery in this hands-on workshop ! Students learn basic hand building and design techniques , creating beautiful pieces that you and your family will cherish . During this five-day course , we craft a scraffito serving platter , bowl and trivet . While the pots are in the kiln , we explore the arts of printmaking , weaving and painting , and then apply those techniques to unique pieces for the dinner table . Projects include woven placemats , decorated wooden spoons , vegetable prints and chef aprons ! At the end of the week , we celebrate what we ’ ve learned with an elaborate feast for friends and family to enjoy .
SALLY GIERKE has been an elementary school teacher and professional potter for four decades . Her work ranges from functional objects to large-scale murals , some of which have been undertaken as multigenerational collaborations under her direction . Sally has been an artistin-residence in seven national parks and previously worked in the Children ’ s Program at Anderson Ranch Arts Center .
ABIGAIL GIERKE grew up in Iowa and enjoyed spending time in her mother ’ s pottery studio . She currently teaches first grade at Aspen Elementary School and believes the incorporation of art and nature into the daily lives of her students is critically important . She finds that children are at their best when they are engaged , enthusiastic and working from their own ideas . She looks forward to teaching alongside her mother !

Viva Mexico
Katherine Bell & Veronica Madero
Ages : 6 - 8 / 9am - 3pm
CONCEPT : Discover the rich artistic history of Mexico , and create and design art projects based on traditional Mexican folk arts including metalworking , pottery , weaving and paper crafts ! While speaking both English and Spanish , students explore the artisanal landscape of Mexico as we travel through Oaxaca , Chiapas , Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende . We look at and consider various examples of artwork from these regions as well as their historic significance . Students then create their own artworks inspired by whimsical wooden toys known as alejibres , tin artwork or hojalata , papel picado or cut paper banners , talavera ceramics , and more ! At the end of the course , we celebrate with a piñata for our friends and families to enjoy .
KATHERINE BELL has worked with communities in the Bay Area , South America , Minnesota and her hometown of Aspen , Colo ., engaging children through art . She is currently the Children ’ s Program and Outreach Manager for Anderson Ranch Arts Center .
VERONICA MADERO grew up in Mexico and loved art workshops as a child . She spent many summers going to museums , painting and learning and has studied special effects and animation . Veronica currently makes films and lives in Carbondale , Colo .
