CONCEPT : Challenge convention and broaden the spectrum of materials used to make your work in this provocative workshop — one that encourages you to see existing elements with new potential for content and form . We examine our physical surroundings and the materials of our daily lives , evaluating how we use the inherent assets of these materials — both physical and psychological — to create new forms and definitions . Reassembling , repurposing , recombining , relocating , annotating and deconstructing are all process filters through which we push materials to communicate their histories and properties . We give these concepts context by viewing the work of artists such as Rachel Perry Welty , Mark Bradford , Sarah Sze and Tara Donovan .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We encourage students to bring their own unconventional art materials , and discover new materials through foraging and experimentation . Diverse ways and processes to creatively combine materials , such as fastenings , unconventional adhesives , and format are developed as we respond to our chosen materials both formally and with an investment in content .
ACTIVITIES : Students engage through demonstrations , slide presentations and studio exercises . We discuss assigned readings during class dialogue , and participate in brief discussions . Opportunities for discovery and experimentation are structured and encouraged . Each day is a combination of material experimentation , project work , writing exercises , dialogue and individual instruction .
FACULTY : Gabriela Salazar has an M . F . A . from the Rhode Island School of Design . Her residencies and fellowships include LMCC ’ s Workspace , Yaddo , The Lighthouse Works and more . Gabriela ’ s most recent solo show was at Efrain Lopez Gallery in Chicago , Ill . She lives , works and teaches in New York City .
