CONCEPT : Engage your imagination and explore the tradition of the Wunderkammer , or Cabinet of Curiosities . Through collection and display , this form is distinct from the history of the rational museum we know today . This unique workshop explores the visual language of the Wunderkammer tradition through the sculptural reconstruction of curious specimens , fantastical beings , natural wonders and mysterious artifacts . We begin by choosing an object from the rich illustrations of the 17th century to explore both materially and conceptually . The instructor introduces the group to the history , conceptual and material aspects of the extraordinary world of early collecting , and guides you in the production of your own cabinet of curiosity .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Sculptures are made with the new generation of water-based resins . Students build armatures and learn how to “ skin ” or cover them with resin surfaces . All sculptures are finally coated with highly luminescent glow paint .
ACTIVITIES : Morning sessions are lecture- and seminar-based , with open discussion on the history or early collections . Later in the day , we transition to the process of making marvelous beasts and uncanny artifacts based on the 17th-century illustrations .
FACULTY : Mark Dion was born in New Bedford , Mass ., in 1961 . He received a B . F . A . ( 1986 ) and an honorary doctorate ( 2003 ) from the University of Hartford , Hartford Art School , in Connecticut . He also attended the School of Visual Arts in New York , the prestigious Whitney Museum of American Art ' s Independent Study Program , and is an Honorary Fellow of Falmouth University in the United Kingdom ( 2014 ).

SKILL LEVEL : II
CONCEPT : Explore geologic time and human evolution in a week-long workshop that challenges conventions and asks provocative questions including : how do these elements affect art and the artist , and what will your art “ project ” to present and future audiences ? In this one-ofa-kind course , students construct individual , site-specific installations ranging from large-scale to micro-miniature . Considering Robert Smithson ’ s concept of site / nonsite , from the geologic timescale to the instantaneous communication of social media , we develop a “ message ” from expedient materials — simple , fabricated or found .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students conceptualize an image- or text-based message , from abstract to readable , to be constructed in artist-chosen sites . Materials are scavenged and works are constructed from expedient and available materials , all arranged to broadcast a message . We also create a portable time capsule .
ACTIVITIES : This course begins with a visual lecture and reading that covers the conceptual underpinnings , related artists and ideation for inspiration . Students begin with site selection and materials collecting . This is followed by idea development and fabrication over the following three days , while messages are fine-tuned .
FACULTY : Pam Longobardi was born in Glen Ridge , N . J ., the daughter of an ocean lifeguard and the Delaware State diving champion , and currently lives in Atlanta , Ga ., where she is Distinguished Professor at Georgia State University . Her artwork has been shown extensively across the U . S . and internationally , and in 2006 , she founded the Drifters Project , an international collaborative artistic research project focusing on ocean plastic pollution . In 2013 , Pam won the prestigious Hudgens Prize , one of the largest art prizes in North America .

CONCEPT : Delve into a new and exciting approach to making jewelry in this engaging workshop , helmed by a long-time pioneer of alternative metals . We experiment with various materials , such as steel , styrofoam , cement , rock and diamonds , and use industrial materials to make fine jewelry . Students interact with found materials and unconventional methods of application . Take your jewelry making skill set to an intriguing and provocative new level in this exploratory five-day course .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students learn to work with stones , gems , silver , gold and a large variety of alternative industrial materials . We explore casting , soldering , forming and cutting , and utilize different techniques to implement cement and alternative industrial materials into jewelry .
ACTIVITIES : The instructor leads daily demonstrations , and students partake in studio work time , hands-on assistance , and individual and group discussions .
FACULTY : Concrete has been a prominent material for Jim Cotter ’ s artistic work . He has been a pioneer of alternative materials since the 1970s , applying the use of concrete in many ways by creating contemporary jewelry , hollowware and sculpture .
