SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Explore the fundamentals of mold making and establish a solid foundation for sculpture in the process . This week-long workshop is designed for students with little to no previous mold making experience , but its comprehensive approach ensures a solid understanding of mold making and casting through a dual lens of technical and conceptual possibilities . Explore various methods and processes that are grounded in reproduction , copies and multiples . Investigate negative and positive space , materiality and composite objects . Participate in generous studio time while you receive training and personal guidance from faculty .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students learn to cast multiple-piece plaster molds to introduce students to diagnostic methods that address mold divisions , undercuts and efficient mold piece assemblage . Flexible urethane molds are used with less traditional casting options , including pourable and brushable methods .
ACTIVITIES : Using a studio workshop format , students create works that utilize replication as a point of departure . Various mold making demonstrations and lectures inform on the production and development of individual projects .
FACULTY : John Emerson is an American miscellaneist who spends most of his time in and out of the studio . His work has been exhibited widely in the U . S . Emerson received his M . F . A . from Alfred University in Ceramics , and he is the Studio Coordinator of Sculpture at Anderson Ranch .

SKILL LEVEL : II
CONCEPT : Open your sculptural practice to a world of possibility in this two-week exploration building a 3-D printer . This course unfolds in two parts . In week one , each student builds a 3-D printer designed in part by the instructor . In week two , we put the project to the test and explore the possibilities of 3-D printing in rigid plastic , flexible polymers and other experimental materials . Slide presentations examine the nascent history of 3-D printing and digital fabrication as a vehicle for artistic self-expression . Students get to keep the printer you build during the workshop .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We utilize basic assembling , basic soldering , 3-D design and computeraided drafting , basic electronics , clay work , 3-D scanning , experimentation and drawing .
ACTIVITIES : In week one , we navigate through the various stages of constructing a 3-D printer , with no one left behind , until complete . In week two , our focus shifts to experimentation with a range of printing materials while learning how to craft 3-D models . Relevant art projects are presented and discussed throughout .
FACULTY : Tom Lauerman works within the overlap of sculpture , craft and design . He received his M . F . A . from Cranbrook Academy of Art and is an Assistant Professor at Pennsylvania State University . Tom synthesizes digital fabrication processes with craft techniques in pursuit of an eclectic and personal form of bricolag

CONCEPT : Take an in-depth look at the foundation of ceramic sculpture in this contemplative week long workshop that challenges students to take their ceramic storytelling to a new level . We use the figure — whether it be personal , political , social or religious — as the focal point of telling a story . The instructor works with students to help them develop iconography , symbols and forms that are personal and meaningful . We look at the figure as it has been used to chronicle the human condition as a way to speak about distinct cultures .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We use all available ceramic techniques in order to be successful in the construction of our work . We complement this hands-on exploration with discussions and demonstrations about these techniques . Instruction is customized to each student ’ s experience and course objectives .
ACTIVITIES : Students drive the daily focus of the class with suggestions on what they would like the instructor to demonstrate . Once students feel comfortable , they continue their work .
FACULTY : James Tisdale is a figurative artist who has studied abroad and is a recipient of an NEA grant . He has been a resident and visiting artist nationally at Archie Bray and The Philadelphia Clay Studio , and internationally in China and the ICHSU in Hungary . James ’ work has been exhibited internationally and published in various books and periodicals .
